Title: From Alchemy to Science: Mathematical Foundations of Deep Learning
AbstractNeural networks and deep learning have been responsible for tremendous progress in machine learning over the past decade across many application areas, including image, audio, and text processing. Although their practical success is undeniable, our mathematical understanding of when and why they are so successful is rudimentary—largely because they cannot be analyzed through classical paradigms of statistics and algorithmic complexity. In this lecture, I will discuss some of these mysteries and the attempts to solve them. The lecture will be accessible to an audience with a general background in computer science and information science, and will not assume any specialized knowledge of deep learning.
BiographyAndrej Risteski is an assistant professor in the Machine Learning Department at Carnegie Mellon University. Before his position at Carnegie Mellon, Andrey was a Norbert Wiener Fellow in the Department of Applied Mathematics at MIT, as well as at the Institute for Data Science and Statistics (IDSS). Andrey holds a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Princeton University, where he also earned his bachelor's degree.
His research area is the mathematical and scientific foundations of machine learning and artificial intelligence, with a special focus on deep learning and neural networks. Andrey is a recipient of the Amazon Research Award (“Causal + Deep Out-of-Distribution Learning”), NSF CAREER Award (“Theoretical Foundations of Modern Machine Learning Paradigms: Generative and Out-of-Distribution”) and the “Best Young Scientist” award in the natural, mathematical, and technical sciences (as part of the „Successful Young” competition, awarded by President Stevo Pendarovski).
