Dr. Smile Markovski

He was born in Bitola in 1949 and completed his primary and secondary education in Skopje. He graduated in 1972 from the Applied Mathematics programme at the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Skopje. At the same faculty, he obtained his master’s degree in 1978 with the thesis “Extensions of Models” and his doctorate in 1980 after defending the dissertation “Subalgebras of Groupoids”, supervised by Professor Slavisha Preshić of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in Belgrade. During the 1980/81 academic year, he undertook specialist training at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, United States. That year, he also completed a three-month study visit at NTNU in Trondheim, Norway, through the Erasmus Mundus NordSecMob Master’s Programme in Security and Mobile Computing. After graduating, he was appointed a teaching assistant at the Institute of Mathematics within the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. He became an assistant professor at the Faculty of Mathematics in Skopje in 1981, an associate professor at the Institute of Informatics within the re-established Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics in 1986, and a full professor in 1992. He has taught courses in numerous mathematical and computing disciplines, including Sets and Logic; Algebra I, II and III; Algebraic and Discrete Structures; Topology; Discrete Structures; Finite Mathematics; Algorithms and Automata; Computer-Assisted Learning; Information Theory; and Mathematics for Forestry Students. He has taught in postgraduate programmes at the Institute of Economics in Skopje and at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and is responsible for several postgraduate courses at the Institute of Informatics, including Graph Theory, Algebra and Logic, Algorithms and Complexity, Process Algebras, Lambda Calculus, and Computability Theory. His research interests include algebra—universal algebra, particularly n-ary and vector-valued structures, model theory and applied algebra—and discrete mathematics. As an author and co-author, he has published numerous scientific papers in these fields in national and international journals and proceedings. He has presented papers at many national and international conferences on algebra and computer science. He has participated in and managed several research projects. He has supervised master’s and doctoral candidates at the Institute of Informatics and organised two scientific conferences held in Skopje and Ohrid. For approximately twenty years, he has served as a reviewer for Mathematical Reviews, a journal of the American Mathematical Society, of which he is also a member. Within the Union of Mathematicians and Computer Scientists of Macedonia, he has served as treasurer, president, member of committees at several levels, and organiser of mathematics and informatics competitions. He has lectured at approximately ten schools for young mathematicians and has published around twenty professional and popular-science papers. He is a member of the Informatics Committee at the Pedagogical Institute of Macedonia. Under his supervision, approximately twenty educational-software packages have been developed, and he participated in the Educational Software seminar in London. He is the author of the university textbook Finite Mathematics and co-author of two secondary-school textbooks. He served as editor of the journals Sigma and Bit+. He has held the positions of President of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Council, Head of the Department of Theoretical Foundations of Informatics, and Head of the Institute of Informatics. He was named the Faculty’s best graduate in 1972, received a plaque from Ss. Cyril and Methodius University, and was awarded the Order of Labour with Silver Rays.
