Objectives of the course programme (competences)

The subject is a support course and is necessary for introducing the concepts of functions, limits, derivatives, and integrals, which are required in almost all upper-level courses.

Course content

(1) Definition of a function. Properties of functions. Operations on functions. (1) Rules. Families of functions. (1) Inverse functions. Exponential and logarithmic functions. (3) Limits. Calculation of limits. Continuity. (2) Definition of the derivative. Techniques of differentiation. Derivative of a composite function. (1) L'Hospital's rule. (1) Application of derivatives: monotonicity of functions, convexity and concavity of functions, local extremes. (1) Investigating the properties and sketching the graph of a function. Global extremes. (1) Integrating: indefinite integral, integration by substitution. (1) Definite integral. Fundamental Theorem of Calculus.

Learning methods

Lectures using presentations, interactive lectures, exercises (using equipment and software packages), teamwork, case studies, guest lectures, independent preparation and defense of a project assignment and a seminar paper.
