10. Objectives of the course programme (competences) Understanding the concepts and implementations of modern processors. Analysis of modern processors. The student will be able to design, maintain, and program computer systems with modern processors and processing elements.
11. Course content Modern microprocessors, POST-RISC technology, superscalar and VLIW processors, in-order and out-of-order processing, register renaming, branch prediction, instruction issue, instruction storage and delivery, instruction execution, instruction completion, and instruction retirement. Memory architecture design. Analysis of modern processors from Intel, IBM, and Sun. Clusters, shared-memory multiprocessors, and their performance. Programming for multicore processors. Advanced graphics processing units and their exploitation. Algorithmic techniques in GPU programming.
12. Learning methods Lectures supported by slide presentations, interactive lectures, practical classes (using equipment and software packages), teamwork, case studies, guest lecturers, independent preparation and defence of a project assignment and seminar paper, and learning in an electronic environment (forums and consultations).
