Objectives of the course programme (competences)

The student will acquire basic knowledge of the design, control, and management of optical networks using modern networking technologies, as well as some current developments in the field.

Course content

Introduction to optical networks. Signal propagation through optical fibers. Optical components and modulation. Optical layer clients (SONET/SDH, OTN). WDM network elements. Control and management of optical networks. Control and management of optical networks. Robustness of optical networks. WDM network design. Dynamic routing and spectrum allocation. Access optical networks. Packet switching. Various aspects in examples of real optical networks.

Learning methods

Lectures supported by slide presentations, interactive lectures, practical classes (using equipment and software packages), teamwork, case studies, guest lecturers, independent preparation and defence of a project assignment and seminar paper, and learning in an electronic environment (forums and consultations).
