Objectives of the course programme (competences)

The goal of the course is for students to acquire the skills necessary for academic and technical writing and presenting, with due consideration for ethics and critical thinking. Upon completion of the course, the student is expected to be able to produce high-quality academic texts (paragraph, essay, CV, formal letter) in English and Macedonian. to differentiate between different technical texts (specification, elaboration, report, technical documentation) and to identify their parts; to deliver a 15-minute effective presentation on a given topic in English and to answer questions related to the presentation;

Course content

Contents by week: (1) Introduction, non-technical skills for an engineer, how technology is changing communication between people, ethics versus law (2) Effective communication strategies, (2) Writing technical reports (1) Communication and presentation skills (2) Presentation preparation, strategies for effective communication (1) Using visual aids and communication tools (1) Teamwork, interdisciplinary teams, conflict resolution (1) Social effects of engineering solutions (risks, safety, ...) (1) Ethical issues in the profession (1) Intellectual property and legal aspects.

Learning methods

Lectures using presentations, interactive lectures, exercises (using equipment and software packages), teamwork, case studies, guest lectures, independent preparation and defense of a project assignment and a seminar paper.
