10. Objectives of the course programme (competences) Course Objectives (Competencies): For an engineer working with network technologies, it is beneficial to have knowledge of measuring, analyzing, and modeling internet traffic in order to design networks more effectively and to better utilize their performance. This course will introduce students to the fundamentals of communication traffic engineering, as well as various techniques for the analysis, measurement, characterization, classification, and prediction of Internet traffic.
11. Course content Introduction. Modeling traffic processes and intervals. Lossy communication systems. Dimensioning communication networks. Delayed data communications. Distributed measurement of Internet traffic. Analysis and visualization of Internet traffic. Network tomography and traffic estimation. Characterization and prediction of Internet traffic. Statistical classification of traffic. Instability detection and routing optimization.

Learning methods Lectures supported by slide presentations, interactive lectures, exercises (using equipment and software packages), teamwork, case studies, independent preparation and defense of a project assignment and a seminar paper, and learning in an electronic environment (forums, consultations).
